Knee Pain

Knee Problems

Knee problems are another common injury outside of back pain. Knee issues arise as a result of:

  • Overuse of the knee joint
  • Injury
  • Arthritic changes in the joint
Causes:
  • causes of degenerative joint disease of knee include
  • trauma
  • Charcot joint (neuropathic arthropathy)
  • inflammatory arthritis (such as crystal arthropathy [calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease, gout], rheumatoid arthritis (RA), septic arthritis)
  • congenital or development cause
additional causes of degenerative joint disease include
  • endocrine disorders (acromegaly, hyperparathyroidism, diabetes)
  • metabolic disorders (ochronosis, hemosiderosis, Wilson's disease)
  • neuropathic disorders (diabetes, syphilis)
  • avascular necrosis
  • Paget disease

Symptoms of knee injuries include: moderate to severe pain, swelling, and dysfunction of the knee.

Your chiropractor will perform a physical examination to identify the cause of knee pain. Additional testing such as x-rays, blood work and blood pressure measurement of the leg may be needed to pinpoint the source of pain.

If you are diagnosed with overuse of the knee joint, the treatment goal will be to reestablish balance of the muscles, restore movement and correct any misalignments. A brace can be used to reestablish alignment in the patella and knee joint.

If you have knee problems as a result of injury, then your chiropractor may recommend physical therapy along with healthy lifestyle changes to prevent future occurrences. Knee pain as a result of arthritic changes in the joint is generally treated with anti-inflammatory medications along with lifestyle changes to reduce pain.

Chiropractic care:
  • Adjustment
  • Cold laser
  • Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), also known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)
  • Heat Therapy - increases blood flow, tolerance for pain, flexibility.
  • Cold Therapy - such as cold packs, ice massage, OTC sprays and ointments - reduces pain by numbing the nerves around the joint.
  • Isometric ("pushing") exercises to help build muscle strength without subjecting inflamed joints to excessive wear
  • Isotonic ("pulling") exercises to further increase muscle strength and help preserve function
At home, general care involves "RICE":
  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation
  • Bracing and Orthotics
  • Braces or shoe inserts may be recommended to take pressure off of certain joints
